Usually, various different treatment methods are combined to achieve the most optimal results. One treatment method for prostate cancer is Brachytherapy. This is a form of treatment where several radiation seeds are inserted into the cancerous tumor located in the prostate gland. Subsequently, the inserted seeds produce a dose of radiation into the tumor over a certain time frame which can be several months depending on the stage of the cancer. Even though brachytherapy has the same principal as conventional radiotherapy, the way it is administered is quite different.

The basic mechanism of both methods is to apply radiation to eradicate cancerous cells. With brachytherapy, radiation seeds supply the dosage of radiation need to eradicate the cancer. With this method, radiation exposure levels are not damaging to other parts of the body, but it can still cause short term and long term side effects. A majority of brachytherapy side effects are similar to conventional radiotherapy but there are slight differences.

Several short term side effects for prostate cancer radiotherapy include tiredness, pubic hair loss, diarrhea and cystitis which can cause pain during urination. As for the long term side effects of prostate cancer radiotherapy include urinary incontinence and difficulties or inability to have an erection. On the other hand, brachytherapy is less likely to cause urinary incontinence compared to conventional radiotherapy.

Several studies have claimed that even with adequate chemotherapy there is an estimated 33% likelihood that the cancer may recur sometime in the future even after it has be eradicated by radiation.

Radiotherapy is usually combined with hormonal therapy to accomplish the most beneficial results. Often before undergoing radiotherapy, the physician will administer hormonal therapy which inhibits testosterone needed by the cancer to develop. Basically, it all comes down to the preference of the patient as to which type of treatment they would like to undergo but their physician will surely recommend the most adequate and beneficial course of treatment.

The prostate is an organ the size of a walnut, surrounding the urethra, producing a fluid that becomes part of the male’s semen. A malignant growth in the prostate is referred to as prostate cancer and is very common especially in older men. Prostate cancer is devastating for men and traditional as well as non-traditional prostate cancer treatments are made available in our present time.

Prostate cancer treatment begins from the time of diagnosis when the man copes with stress caused by disbelief, fear, anger, and depression. A positive attitude towards the situation must be encouraged although acceptance comes gradually. Coping with prostate cancer treatment and the cancer itself can be traumatic. Patients diagnosed with the cancer actively participate in deciding process on which treatment to consider. Physicians make an effort to encourage patients to maintain a normal routine as much as possible, engage in physical activity, and stay optimistic.

Prostate cancer treatment may vary from one cancer case to another. Common methods are surgery, medication, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and other alternative therapies. Side effects are expected and the cancer may lead to incontinence, impotence, and nerve damage. Dietary supplements and herbal medicines are made available to prostate cancer patients but these options must be properly evaluated before administration.

The prostate cancer treatment that best addresses the patient’s case depends on the spread of the cancer, age, prognosis, and potential benefits and side effects of the given available treatments. Experts work with patients to determine the appropriate therapy and combination of therapies.

Advanced prostate cancer treatments are often combinations of different therapies. Radiation follows surgery to make sure that the cancer cells don’t recur and is also paired with hormone treatment. Radiation kills the cancer by directing radioactive beams on the cancer or by using radioactive implants in the tumor.

Laproscopy, retropubic surgery, or perineal surgery refers to the surgical treatment methods by removing the prostate gland. This is considered the best prostate cancer treatment because it presents a definite cure even if uncomfortable side effects may be experienced.

Brachytherapy or radioactive seed implants is a popular method of curing prostate cancer. The surgeon delivers a higher dose of radiation to the tumor location for a longer period of time.

New prostate cancer treatment methods direct greater radiation to the prostate cancer with lesser damaging effects to the nearby tissues. External beam radiation therapy or EBRT uses high powered x-ray machines to destroy the prostate cancer cells through mapping the area that needs to receive such radiation.

Chemotherapy involves the use of chemicals to kill the cancer cells. It is a very effective treatment method but does not cure the disease. A number of side effects may be experienced.

Hormonal therapy refers to inhibition of testosterone production in the body.

Watchful waiting is an approach used for prostate cancer in situations with a high likelihood of self-resolution. High uncertainty in diagnosis and risks of therapy may outweigh health benefits. Watchful waiting prior to surgery when possibilities may present worsening of a symptom.

Metastasis can occur from the malignant tumor in the prostate to other parts of the body, most commonly the bones and lymph nodes. The symptoms brought about by the cancer are pain in the pelvic part of the body, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual contact, or erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms may develop as the disease progresses.

Conventional treatment for prostate cancer is available in varied options. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are three common treatment forms. The extent of the prostate cancer, the general state of the patient, and all influential factors assist in determining the most appropriate treatment combination.

Surgical oncology is a treatment for prostate cancer which is the oldest form of treating cancer. Surgery plays an important role in diagnosing and staging cancer and may be done for many other reasons. It may be preventative or prophylactic surgery, curative surgery, debulking or cytoreductive surgery, palliative surgery, supportive surgery, and restorative or reconstructive surgery.

Chemotherapy as a treatment for prostate cancer treats the disease with the use of drugs (anticancer drugs) that can kill prostate cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be administered intravenously, by injection, or by mouth. Chemotherapy may be used alone, or in combination with radiation therapy or surgery. New approaches have been developed to reduce side effects such as nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and mouth sores.

Radiation is a treatment for prostate cancer used to treat the cancer and provide relief for symptoms as well. Advanced radiation techniques are available such as high dose rate (HDR) Brachytherapy and intensity modulation radiation therapy (IMRT) that aid in the patient’s fight against prostate cancer. Three-dimensional conformal radiation is an innovative radiation technique that uses computed tomography (CT) to expose an exact contoured area to radiation allowing normal tissue to be spared in the process. The external beam radiation technique involves directing radiation beams from outside the body, focusing on cancerous internal organ or tissue within the body.

Biotherapy or immunotherapy is a treatment for prostate cancer which uses the body’s immune system to fight prostate cancer or lessen side effects caused by other cancer treatments.

Non-conventional therapy or complementary and alternative medicine covers a wide range of healing and treating approaches. Most non-conventional treatment alternatives complement conventional cancer therapies such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Nutritional therapy is a treatment for prostate cancer that is possible through proper assessment of a patient’s risk for malnutrition where an individual nutrition plan is implemented. Pain management is a treatment with the goal of providing relief from pain and maintaining a normal quality of life. Naturopathic medicine is a form of treatment that assists in maintaining physical well being and helps avoid physical weakness. Mind-body medicine or psychoneuroimmunology refers to management of a patient’s way of thinking, emotions, and mood states. Physical therapy ensures that the patient maintains a corresponding level of physical activity. Therapies involving spiritual support inspire and motivate patients in connection to their treatment methods to fight cancer.

Another article about what is cancer…
1. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, besides skin cancer in American men. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer, accounting for 9% of cancer-related deaths in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2008, about 186,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. 30% of prostate cancers occur in men under 65. Approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 35 will die of it. More than 2 million men in America who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
2. Sometimes different prostate problems have similar symptoms. For example, a man with prostatitis and another with BPH may both have a frequent, urgent need to urinate. A man with BPH may have trouble starting to urinate while another may have to urinate frequently during the night. Or a man in the early stages of prostate cancer may have no symptoms at all.
3. One of the problems of the prostate does not lead to another. For example, having prostatitis or an enlarged prostate does not increase the likelihood of prostate cancer. It is true that some men with prostate cancer also have BPH, but the two conditions are not automatically linked. Most men with BPH do not develop prostate cancer. But because the early symptoms for both conditions could be the same, a doctor would need to evaluate them. It is also possible to have more than one condition at a time. This confusing array of potential scenarios makes all men, especially after 45 years of age, have a complete medical examination that includes the PSA test and DRE every year.
4. The PSA test in the blood determines whether you have prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of a protein essential to human reproduction, PSA (prostate specific antigen), is in his blood. PSA turns your gelatinous pre-semen into a liquid, supporting ejaculation. If your PSA is below 4, most doctors agree that it need not be tested again for a year. During the annual, remember that it is normal for your reading to rise by a few tenths of a point every year. In general, only a drastic increase in PSA (an increase of at least 0. 75 points or 20 percent) is considered a reason for concern. This test is recommended on an annual basis for all men over 50 (and for men above 45 if there is family history of prostate problems)
5. Over 100 million men worldwide suffer from symptoms of BPH (Enlarged Prostate). At the time they are 60, there is a 50% chance that you have BPH. At the time they are 85, there is a 90% probability that you have BPH.
6. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. If detected early and is still confined to the gland itself then the chances of survival are excellent. The modern surgical techniques, in combination with drugs such as Viagra, means that an operation to treat prostate cancer does not signal the end of a patient's sex life.
The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland near the bladder in men that produces one component of semen. A wide range of prostate cancers, some of which are extremely gentle and indolent and can cause significant health problems. However, others have the ability to spread to other parts of the body and cause major damage if not treated. This means it is important to detect prostate cancer early and then can be treated with radiation therapy and surgery.
Symptoms of prostate cancer
The first sign of prostate cancer can be felt when you go to the bathroom. You may find that you go to the bathroom a lot more and you can not maintain a full-time flow of urination. However, these problems are also associated with a series of medical problems and not always indicate prostate cancer.
The prostate cancer symptoms are caused by cell growth, either malignant or benign, pushing against the urethra, the thin tube that connects the bladder to the penis. If you are suffering from the symptoms above, then you should look out for pain when urinating or ejaculating, blood in urine or semen and pain in the back, hips or thighs.
Again, these symptoms may be caused by any number of things, including infection, but it would be advisable to visit your GP for review. There are several ways a doctor can detect prostate cancer. The simplest way is the digital rectal exam, in which the doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to feel an enlarged prostate. Following this a blood test can be performed to find any increase in chemicals in the blood, and then come more sophisticated tests such as ultrasound and x-rays.
The causes of prostate cancer
The exact causes of prostate cancer are still unclear, but there are a number of factors that can increase the chances of development. These include, but are not limited to, a family history of prostate cancer and a diet high in fat.
There has been a series of studies on the relationship between prostate cancer and vasectomy, but these have so far proven inconclusive.
Treatment for prostate cancer
Sometimes the best treatment for prostate cancer can be for not trying at all. This sometimes is the case of older men when you consider that surgery or other treatments may cause more harm than good.
If the cancer has spread from the prostate, or believed to be spread, surgery is usually the first course of action to eliminate while it is still possible and prevent further spread. A prostatectomy is when the prostate gland is removed, usually with small parts of the lymphatic system near the gland. However, this surgery can cause nerve damage that can prevent men getting an erection anymore, or maintain complete control over urination. This does not mean that a man's sexual life is more modern though, as "nerve-sparing" surgical techniques, when combined with medications like Viagra, can make to minimize the effects on function and quality of life.
Another treatment option is radiation therapy, which will be precisely centered in the pelvic area, while other doctors are fighting prostate cancer using the body's own hormones. In the latter case, the cells of the prostate, including cancer, are sensitive to the levels of certain male hormones, may be much less active if levels are reduced. However, this can reduce the sex drive of the patient.
Advances in prostate cancer surgery
Advances in prostate cancer surgery mean that surgeons can now successfully remove the prostate without causing damage to the nerves of the problem that has been unavoidable in the past. In addition, technological advances mean that much higher radiation doses can be targeted more precisely on the prostate, killing more cancer cells with fewer treatments.
A technique called prostate brachytherapy has also made great strides in recent times and their use is increasingly common. There are two methods of brachytherapy – permanent seed implantation and high dose rate (HDR) temporary brachytherapy.
Permanent seed implantation involves injecting approximately 100 radioactive seeds into the prostate gland, which fight cancer and emit radiation at low doses for several weeks or months, and the seeds remain in the prostate gland permanently .
HDR temporary brachytherapy involves placing tiny plastic catheters into the prostate gland, and then give a series of radiation treatments through these catheters.
Another option is selective high-intensity ultrasound, which uses sound waves to "melt" away the cancer.
Detected in its early stages, prostate cancer can be effectively treated and cured. Like other cancers, prostate cancer cause is not known, seems to be more common in African American men and men with a family history of disease. Prostate cancer is usually a slow growing cancer that can take years before it becomes deadly.
The prostate is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. About one in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 34 will die of the disease. Prostate cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in men of all ages and is the most common cause of cancer death in men over 75 years of age.
Weak or interrupted flow of urine and painful or burning urination can be symptoms to watch. Because prostate cancer symptoms may resemble other diseases or disorders, men who experience any of these symptoms should undergo a thorough work in progress to determine the underlying cause of symptoms. If you have one or more symptoms of prostate cancer, you should consult a qualified doctor as soon as possible.
There are some symptoms to consider. Some men experience symptoms that may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. The need to urinate frequently, especially at night is another symptom.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test measures the PSA enzyme in your blood for abnormalities. Your doctor may use one or two of the most common tests for prostate cancer detection. Note that experts report that PSA tests are unreliable and are seeking better ways to diagnose prostate cancer.
A biopsy of the prostate gland usually confirms the diagnosis. What is called free PSA may help to differentiate between BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy), an enlargement of the prostate gland and prostate cancer. A series of tests may be done to confirm a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Besides hormonal drugs, hormone manipulation may also be done by surgically removing the testicles. Medications can have many side effects including hot flashes and loss of sexual desire. Chemotherapy drugs are often used to treat prostate cancers that are resistant to hormonal treatments.
Since prostate tumors require testosterone to grow, reducing the testosterone level is used to prevent further growth and spread of cancer. Surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and chemotherapy have significant side effects, know perfectly well what they are before continuing. Treatment options may vary depending on the stage of tumor.
Surgery, radiotherapy and hormonal therapy can interfere with libido on a temporary or permanent. Hormonal manipulation is mainly used as treatment to relieve symptoms in men whose cancer has metastasized (spread). Approaches to treatment include: ever watchful waiting only to see if the cancer is growing slowly and not cause any symptoms.
If radiation is as good as removing the prostate gland is debatable, and the decision about which to choose, if any, can be difficult. Side effects of chemotherapy drugs depend on whether you are taking and how often and how long are taken. An oncologist, a cancer specialist, usually recommend treatment with a single drug or drug combination.
Buy lacinato kale and juice in blender with sweet carrots. Eat foods that contain essential fatty acids. Some foods and beverages to avoid inflammatory are: caffeine, salt, sugar, meat, dairy products, additives, soft drinks, white flour, white rice, alcoholic beverages, fast food, processed vegetable oils, and refined packaging and food processing.
Make raw applesauce using a highly nutritious food processor and put in 3-4 tubular pesticide-free apples, skin, and mix for one minute, much better for you than canned applesauce very elaborate and add 1 / 4 tsp. cinnamon or two tablespoons of ground flaxseed for another boost. Drink plenty of pure filtered water, at least a quart a day. Studies done on antioxidant vitamins question their value when not on food, it is clearly better to consume these antioxidants in living foods because they may also need to work with other nutrients in food to work properly.
For snacks, choose raw nuts unsalted, lifeless, rather than roasted nuts. A good diet, natural treatment approach is to avoid inflammatory acidic foods, these are the foods that are not alive. With natural treatments there will be fewer, if any, side effects or adverse reactions.
Most men with prostate cancer survive at least five years after diagnosis, 93% survive at least 10 years, and 67% survive more than 15 years. Because prostate cancer is a slow growing disease, many men with this disease die of other causes before dying of prostate cancer. If you've been diagnosed with prostate cancer choose the option that best suits you and your good health to continue.
